CIBC is closing its branch in Elkhorn.
A spokesperson for the company says in an email it's a decision they consider very carefully.
The spokesperson says they have seen declining, low business volumes in recent years.
The public was given notice of the closure in December. A public meeting was held this past Tuesday, but vice-president of the Elkhorn and District Chamber of Commerce Clayton Canart says it was in not a meeting to potentially keep the branch open.
Canart says there was disappointment and some emotion at the meeting.
"(It's) to be expected when you know you've supported a bank... going back with families, some people have been dealing there for 60, 70, 80 years, so that's a lot of time to be tied and support a bank to have them come in and basically without any notice just tell you 'sorry, we're leaving,'" says Canart.
CIBC says the meeting was to answer questions and discuss alternative banking options.
The Elkhorn branch will close August 18th. Clients will be transitioned to CIBC's Virden Banking Centre.
Canart says a group has been put together to explore finding a new financial institution, and they're leaning towards a credit union.
