The general manager of Manitoba Egg Farmers says they're closely monitoring the avian flu outbreak in Minnesota, and taking steps to prevent the flu from entering Manitoba.
Cory Rybuck says there are a number of precautions that their producers have taken to ensure that a similar outbreak doesn't take place here.
"They're in the best position, whether it's at the barn driveway or certainly at the barn door to limit movement of people and equipment in and out of their facilities. They should be paying attention to any wild fowl, particularly ducks and geese, that might be in their area and limiting exposure to them. Also watching for signs within their own flocks, whether it's a drop in egg production or a sudden spike in mortality. Anything that's really unusual and letting their vet, us or the chief veterinary officer know immediately."
Rybuck says these extra biosecurity measures are being recommended to farmers until the virus cycle is broken in the United States.
