Motorists charged with dangerous driving offences could see a more immediate license suspension if proposed legislation gets passed by the Manitoba government.
The proposed amendment to the Highway Traffic Act announced yesterday by Justice Minister James Allum would allow Manitoba Public Insurance to make an immediate driver's license suspension after receiving a report from law enforcement officials.
MPI spokesman Brian Smiley says this will speed up process of suspending the licenses of dangerous drivers.
"Under the system that is in place right now, we are not able to suspend until a conviction is achieved. Going forward, the police will report this driver, our register can suspend pre-conviction. That doesn't exist now. With the new legislation that is going to be introduced in the session, a driver can be suspended pre-conviction."
Smiley says offences that can result in license suspension include driving 50 km over the speed limit, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily injury.
