A student at the DRCSS will be taking part in a national competition next month.

Helena Thiessen will be participating in the Skills Canada competition taking place from May 26 to the 31 in Saskatoon.

Thiessen says she got the invite after having winning a gold medal in the Workplace Safety and Health category at the Skills Manitoba competition, and credits her success to the work she has done in school.

"I had to do a presentation, then a walkthrough of a work place and also a written test. Being exposed to the shop environment helped me realize where the hazards are and to know what all the safety procedures are."

Thiessen says she's nervous for the competition, but says it's the experience that will be most important for her.
