Making the most of summer is getting outside and enjoying the sun, so protecting your skin from those UV rays is something you don't want to forget.

Protecting your skin is important as exposing your skin to too much sun could result in rashes, sunburns or worse case scenario, skin cancer.

Parkland Rep for Canadian Cancer Society, Karrie Drewniak says the best way to avoid not getting any skin irritation is to try and avoid it from happening.

"Once you've got it, you can put all sorts of creams and stuff on it and sometimes that can make it worse. If you are using sunscreen rinse it off once you go inside so that it doesn't sit on the skin because if you are already sensitive you're going to develop a rash or something from all the chemicals you are putting on your skin as well."

Drewniak adds that using sunscreen is an obvious choice, but there are other ways to help protect your skin from the sun.

"You want to cover up as much as possible, not using heavy clothing but light weight clothing, long sleeves, a hat, sunglasses, long pants rather than shorts because that will protect you from the ultraviolet rays."

Photosensitivity can also cause rashes or sun burns as it's an immune system reaction that commonly occurs as a side effect of medication and is triggered by sunlight.
