The Mountain View School Division is taking exception to the Special Services Proposal No. 7-2015 for fire protection being made by the Municipality of Grandview.
In a letter presented to Grandview council at a meeting last night, MVSD said they have a special levy set for the division as a whole, and their levy would have to be increased to cover the costs if a municipality in their division increases property taxes due to a special services bylaw.
MVSD's concern it that the proposed costs for the levy in Grandview is higher than the previous levy the municipality had in place.
If the new one is approved, the school board would then have to increase their levy budget accordingly.
Grandview mayor Lyle Morran says a previous levy that was put in place five years ago has expired, which is why they are proposing a new levy to be put into this year's budget.
"There's certain places that aren't under the the tax system, like school divisions, hospitals, churches and some of the municipal buildings. There's no tax revenue coming in from them. By doing a special levy, everybody pays for that part of the tax bill. That's the main purpose of it"
The Grandview council has yet to approve this additional levy.
The next council meeting in Grandview is on April 21.
