The Olympic Games are sure to bring Canadians together but will it make them more active?

A recent research conducted by the University of Manitoba says the number of medals won by Canadian Olympians strongly correlates with a rise in obesity rates in the country.

Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy, Dean Kriellaars says the rise in obesity stems from a change in Canadian mentality. Kriellaars claims the drastic shift is do to the "spectator culture" trumping that of the active lifestyle.

For the Parkland area, Kriellaars had the following to say about the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

"If you love it, watch it in moderation I mean don't watch all of the games. Think about it, Parkland you've got beautiful Clear Lake and the entire park to go into, just balance it out. Make sure you are actively participating so you can enjoy a future life of watching more of your favorite things."

Kriellars further added that the advancement in technology has also hindered our ability to get up and be more active.
