The general manager of the Manitoba Pork Council says they're trying to encourage the industry to modernize.
Andrew Dickson says over the next 10 to 15 years, there will be a lot of new technology for pork producers to use.
"There's some new feeding technologies that are out there now and new equipment. The genetics of the pigs has changed dramatically over the last 20 years, and we have a very high performing animal now. Ration design is improved dramatically and producers are adopting these technologies quickly. Slowly but surely we're gonna be moving out of gestation stalls and moving towards group housing systems over the next 10 to 15 years."
The Manitoba Pork Council is holding their Annual General Meeting tomorrow in Winnipeg.
Dickson says last year was a banner year for the industry in terms of making money, but this year things will be a little tighter because prices have come down while grain prices have stayed reasonable.
