A local pharmacist in Dauphin is one of many Manitoba pharmacists who says there should be methods put in place to track the usage of the drug Tylenol 1.
Health Canada says Tylenol 1 does not require a prescription to be sold because the drug doesn't exceed the limit of 8 mg of codeine per tablet under their regulations.
Barret Procyshyn from the Dauphin Clinic Pharmacy says codeine is a substance that can cause addiction problems in individuals who abuse it.
"Codeine is a narcotic substance, so it can cause some addiction and dependence issues, and we know people in our area that have had problems with addiction or dependence on codeine. The issue is that we can't track its usage amongst Manitobans going from pharmacy to pharmacy to get it, and it's sometimes hard to determine who is abusing it."
Procyshyn says their in-store policy is to only sell Tylenol 1 via prescription so they can track the usage of the drug by their patients.
