Changes are coming for people operating any motorized watercraft entering Riding Mountain National Park.
RMNP in conjunction with Parks Canada will be authorizing mandatory watercraft inspections to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species in particular zebra mussels.

Project Manager for the Conservation Restoration Project for Clear Lake, Bob Reside says there are a series of protocols that visitors travelling to the lake by watercraft will have to comply with.

He added, "It's best to clean off their boat, once they arrive to the park they'll have to go through an inspection process which is mandatory and the inspectors will walk them through a fairly straight forward questionnaire."

If a visitors watercraft is found to have zebra mussels or any other aquatic invasive species then a decontamination process will follow.

Since early May, over 1300 motorized watercraft have been inspected by Parks Canada staff at RMNP.
