Dauphin's Veteran's Drive is going to be ripped up and remade starting next month.

According to Mayor Eric Irwin, it's been a long time coming.

"I know there was a petition from the people on Veteran's Drive before I was elected mayor, so they've been petitioning for a number of years, or they were at that time."

Irwin says the stars sort of had to align for the city, and its had to keep ratcheting up its road work budget to accommodate the huge project.

"When I got elected they weren't spending that kind of money on road development. So now our budget can accommodate it. Now, to be fair, it can't accommodate much else during any one given year, but we strike that from the list this year and we can sort of go on to do more projects in years to come."

Veteran's Drive is getting a complete reconstruction, including the concrete curb and gutter, granular subbase and base, and asphalt pavement.

The tender has been awarded to Maple Leaf Construction. It was mentioned at city council this week Maple Leaf intends to start work July 18.

Construction is expected to take 5-6 weeks. Excavation will be done in three sections; paving will be done all at once.
