The Philanthropy Group at Gilbert Plains Collegiate has been awarded the Me to We Schools and National Bank Young Idealist Award.
This award is given to 24 schools across Canada that show dedication and involvement in fundraising for the Adopt a Village program through Me To We.
Teacher/supervisor of the Philanthropy group, Trevor Beals says along with the award they were also given a grant of $4,000.
"This will go towards our project which our group decided last year that they wanted to focus on one thing and they decided to build a school in Haiti."
Grade 11 student and member of the philanthropy group, Bryanne Bates says she couldn't stop smiling when her teacher (Mr. Beals) told her that they had won the award.
"It means that everything, the group of 12 of us, everything that we have been doing means something. It means that all the bake sales and the fundraisers that we've had have actually impacted someone and people are recognizing it."
This now brings their total to $9,090 for the school and they need $10,000.
