The Manitoba Government says people in the province seeking medical assistance in dying no longer must ask permission from the courts.

The province's Justice Department says all members of a medical team assisting in a patient's death will be free prosecution as long as they meet certain guidelines.

Similar rules have been announced in Alberta and British Columbia. The new policy comes after Parliament missed a Supreme court imposed deadline to produce a new law governing assisted dying.
