Safety Concerns Over Natural Medicine Shared by Interim NDP Leader
CancerCare Manitoba's chief medical officer says there are safety concerns about a leaf that the province's interim NDP leader says she has been distributing from her office as a natural medicine.
Dr. Piotr Czaykowski says there's insufficient evidence to show that leaves from the guyabano fruit plant should be considered a treatment for cancer, and he says its consumption could cause movement disorders.
Flor Marcelino had previously contacted a Winnipeg Free Press reporter by email to suggest a possible story on guyabano leaves and her role in promoting and sharing them.
Marcelino said she shares the dried leaves free of charge, bringing them back from the Philippines and asking others to bring them back when they visit the country.

Liberals Vote to Open Party at Convention
Liberals have voted to open their party up to anyone wanting to join, after an appeal by the prime minister to overhaul their constitution.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made his case yesterday at the Liberal convention in Winnipeg, where some delegates suspected him of attempting a blatant power grab.
The new constitution does away with paid membership and allows anyone willing to register as a Liberal to vote on important party decisions.
Trudeau assured delegates that if he thought the new document was about taking power away from the grassroots, he would not have supported it.

100 Years Since the Battle of Verdun
French President Francois Hollande and German Chancellor Angela Merkel stood side-by-side today to mark the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Verdun.
The longest battle of the First World War killed 163,000 French and 143,000 German soldiers and wounded hundreds of thousands of others.
The area where the battle raged on for 10 months still holds millions of unexploded shells, making the area so dangerous that housing and farming are still forbidden.
