It's tick season and the province is reminding people to protect themselves from the potentially disease-carrying insect.

Blacklegged ticks can carry Lyme disease, anaplasmosis, and babesiosis, and the province is telling people to to minimize their risk of exposure to them.

In a press release, the province advises taking precautions such as applying tick repellent, inspecting yourself for ticks after being outside, wearing long pants and long sleeved shirts, and keeping grass and shrubs short.

Some common symptoms of tick-related diseases include fever, chills, nausea, and aches and pain.

Symptoms of Lyme disease can start about three days to one month after a tick bite, often with an expanding rash which then fades. Treatment of Lyme disease is most effective in the early stages of infection.
