A Northern Manitoba First Nation has declared a state of emergency after growing concerns of suicide.

Six people have killed themselves in the last two months in the Cross Lake First Nation, north of Lake Winnipeg.

The band's nursing station has recorded 140 suicide attempts in the last two weeks.

Band Councillor Donnie McKay says health workers can no longer cope as scores of suicide attempts drain resources.

McKay says the community is in desperate need for support from the provincial and federal governments to provide jobs and support facilities.
