Manitoba Public Insurance has been busy with pothole damage claims so far in 2015.

M-I has had nearly 100 claims due to potholes since January 1.

Brian Smiley from MPI says there are some tips motorists can follow to reduce the impact of potholes on their vehicles.

"For motorists out there, if they travel a particular route on a daily basis, they'll see the potholes. You can avoid them by changing the lane safely, or if you need to reduce speed. We strongly urge you to reduce your speed, don't hit that pothole at a heavy rate of speed. You want to take all actions to try to minimize the impact between your vehicle and the pothole."

Smiley says MPI gets an average of 1000 to 1300 pothole claims every year.

The average cost of each claim is $1500.

Smiley says the number of pothole claims MPI gets usually peaks during the months of April and May.
