Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa's MP thinks it was a mistake for the federal government to reverse a policy that would strip dual citizens convicted of terrorism of their Canadian citizenship.

The law was created after Michael Zehaf-Bibeau stormed Parliament Hill in 2014, killing Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

Canada's Immigration Minister says the law would have created a slippery slope, where more crimes could lead to Canadians losing their citizenship.

But Robert Sopuck believes terrorism is different from all other serious crimes.

"Terrorism is something very different. It's the kind of act that's to strike terror into our communities and actually destabilize our society. So it's a far different situation than normal criminal activity."

Zakaria Amara was the only person to have their Canadian citizenship revoked under the law, for his role in planning to bomb the Toronto Stock Exchange and various government sites in 2006.
