Five groups representing seniors in Manitoba are coming together to tackle issues affecting older generations.

Seniors Vote 2016 is trying to raise awareness for retirement income security, affordable housing, health care, transportation, social engagement, and healthy aging.

Manitoba Association of Senior Centres Executive Director Connie Newman says in rural Manitoba, transportation can be difficult for seniors.

"If you're living on a farm and you no longer drive, or your partner no longer drives, then how do you get to Dauphin to get groceries or do banking? It becomes very difficult."

Newman says many seniors in the province are not able to connect with available services, which is why she thinks more senior centres are necessary

"I need to make sure that I have community around me - i.e. - a senior centre to assist me in connecting to people that can work with me to get daily functions in life."

Newman would also like to see seniors and younger people engage more often so they can better understand each others' issues.

Seniors Vote 2016 is made up of the Manitoba Association of Senior Centres, Active Living Coalition for Older Adults, Transportation Options Network for Seniors, Canadian Association of Retired Persons, and the Retired Teachers Association of Manitoba.
