The Dauphin Regional Health Centre, part of the Prairie Mountain Health region, is enhancing its care for stroke patients calling it a "hyper-acute centre". Pat Coburn, Senior Adviser for Acute Care and Nursing, says that with this new program, it allows paramedics to get patients who are experience a stroke to a CT-Scanner as quickly as possible.

"If somebody is in their home and exhibiting signs of a stroke and calls 911 for an ambulance. No matter where they live, the ambulance will by-pass an open emergency department to go directly to Brandon or Dauphin."

Physicians will have access to an on call neurologist and a radiologist 24/7, through Telehealth. From there, both neurologist and radiologist can consult with Physicians and Nurses after the CT-Scan so they can then determine the treatment plan for the patient.

This will all be implemented sometime in April.
