An Entomologist at the University of Manitoba is giving her support to eradicate the species of mosquito that carries the Zika virus.

Dr. Kateryn Rochon says researchers are looking into genetically modifying the aedes aegypti species to keep them from reproducing.

She says, since they are an invasive species, it would not likely have any serious negative impacts on local environments.

"Some people say, 'Oh, but you're removing a food source, or something like this.' Well, you're removing one species of mosquito. The other mosquitoes would love to take the space and not have to compete with this aedes aegypti."

The Public Health Agency of Canada has put Brazil, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Suriname, and Venezuela on Travel Health Notices.

They advise people travelling to those countries get proper vaccinations before leaving.
