A provincial group is looking to eradicate food insecurity in Manitoba.
The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Manitoba says the end goal of this initiative is to get all Manitobans a guaranteed basic income.
Director Molly McCracken says that starts with increasing already existing supports for low-income Manitobans.
"One step towards that is to increase the food budget for people on social assistance, index it to inflation, and have that be another step towards having a basic income or guaranteed income."
McCracken says, since many people who are food insecure are on some form of welfare program already, the best solution to food insecurity is for people to just be understanding.
"I would challenge them to talk to people who are in that situation, and a lot of people are just one paycheque away from being on assistance because it's hard to get ahead in this world. I think we need to have empathy for our fellow citizens and really listen to their life stories."
McCracken cited a study by the Manitoba Government, which says in 2011, 12.4 percent of Manitoban households, and 18.9% of children are food insecure.
