The Parkland Crisis Centre says the number of crisis line calls they're receiving is rising.
They say that in the 2014-2015 fiscal year, the Crisis Centre received 1,473 calls, up about 20% from the year before. As well, the shelter saw close to 1,000 short term emergency residential stays.
Crisis Centre Shelter Worker Angie Smith says the numbers might not paint a full picture of spousal and family violence in the Parkland, as abuse can sometimes go unreported.
"Sometimes mothers may be afraid that their children will be taken away, they may be afraid of repercussions from their abusing partner if police are contacted. Maybe it's because of a lack of finances or community resources."
Smith says there are several intimidation methods that are common among domestic abusers, including showing extreme aggression, blaming others for their problems, and drug use.
She advises victims of abuse to call the Parkland Crisis Centre at 204-638-9484, or the provincial line at 1-877-977-0007
