A new correctional and healing centre in Dauphin has a budget of $180 million dollars.

The project is currently in the design phase, and looks to focus more on rehabilitation, rather than only punishment.

Manitoba Attorney General Gord Mackintosh, says the new centre would help inmates get to a better place in life, so they don't commit further crimes.

"We want to make sure that there are some opportunities for trades to be learned. We want to be more effective at providing interventions and help for those that are dealing with addictions and mental health challenges that might be the underlying reasons for the crimes."

Mackintosh said the new 143,000 square foot facility would triple Dauphin's inmate capacity from 60 to 180.

The jail currently operating in Dauphin is almost 100 years old, being built in 1917 as part of the courthouse complex.

The province is also looking at expanding the city's courthouse, possibly using some of the space from the old prison.

Since both projects are currently in the design stage, there are no concrete timelines for completion.
