The only thing worse than getting stuck on the side of the highway in the middle of nowhere, is when it's -30.
That's why the Canadian Automobile Association recommends all drivers keep an emergency roadside kit in the vehicle at all times.
CAA Public and Media Relations Specialist Erika Miller says the kits you can buy at stores and from the CAA contain several potentially life saving items.
"They'll have a flashlight, flares, candles to keep you warm inside, a blanket, mits. It's always great if you can tailor those kits to how many people are in your car, and for your needs as well.
Miller suggests having something on hand like cat litter or safety salt, to increase the traction on your tires, in case you get stuck in an icy spot.
She also says the optimal time for warming up your car is about three to four minutes. Any more than that, and it is just for comfort. Miller does warn, however, that letting the car run for more than 10 minutes at a time can wear out the vehicle's battery over time.
