With marijuana likely being legalized in the coming years, Manitoba Public Insurance says it's a crucial time to emphasize the dangers of impaired driving.

MPI Spokesperson Brian Smiley says, just because a substance is legal, doesn't mean it's safe to consume while driving.

"Alcohol is also legal but the overconsumption of alcohol will result in criminal charges and dispositions of that sort; I would suggest the same would hold true with marijuana."

MPI says prescription drugs can also impair drivers, especially if they can cause fatigue.

Smiley emphasizes the importance of having a designated driver if you know you'll be taking any impairing substances.
