Revisions have been made to Mountain View School Division's Smoke Free policy to include e-cigarettes and electronic vaporizers.
Superintendent Donna Davidson says there have been some incidents of students bringing e-cigarettes into school and onto school property, and gave other reasons for the decision as well.
"We felt as a division that e-cigarettes encourage and stimulate the use, similar to using tobacco or smoking. As well... healthy living minister Deanne Crothers introduced legislation in June to regulate e-cigarettes in much the same way it does tobacco so we felt that we should be following suit with regards to that."
Davidson says currently being caught on school property smoking carries with it a two-day suspension, but she says that and the division's entire code of conduct is being reviewed.
"Making sure that it matches legislation, that it is current, that is it truly a learning type of experience for the student as opposed to a punishment."
The potential legalization of mariujuana and its implications for the Smoke Free policy, which is explicitly about tobacco products, was discussed briefly at MVSD's last board of trustees meeting.
