Robert Sopuck's role as an opposition member of Parliament now has a more specific direction.

Sopuck has been appointed the Official Opposition Critic for Wildlife Conservation and National Parks, an area in which he has plenty of experience.

He says a priority of his will be ensuring any new conservation or environmental legislation is as rural-friendly as possible.

"I want to make sure that the legislation that the government introduces or reviews is done in such a manner that the livelihoods of rural communities are respected."

Sopuck also says he'll keep a close eye to make sure Riding Mountain National Park co-exists with the people who live around it and use it.

Sopuck is a fisheries biologist, has been an advisor on environment and sustainable development to the Manitoba government, used to write a column for the Winnipeg Free Press on the outdoors, and has written a book on outdoor living as well.
