Considerably more nurse practitioners are working in Manitoba than a decade ago, and Prairie Mountain Health's director for primary care thinks that will continue to expand.
Pam Walker says there certainly is interest in our region.
"As a region, we're currently supporting four students, four RNs with baccalaureate degrees, who are studying towards the nurse practitioner graduate degree. And there are at least three others that I know of who are in the region, and additional ones who have expressed their interest in pursuing this education so that they can provide this primary care service."
Asked whether pushing for more nurse practitioners is the right direction for the province, Walker said it's definitely improving access to primary health care for Manitobans.
Almost 150 nurse practitioners are now working in Manitoba, compared to four 10 years ago.
Wednesday marked the third annual nurse practitioner day in Manitoba.
