The Myrtle M is no more, but the Winnipegosis Historical Society is trying to preserve its legacy.

The historic ship was taken down recently due to safety concerns and it being beyond repair at a reasonable cost.

But Pauline Riley, a Mossey River councillor and president of the Winnipegosis Historical Society, says they are storing some pieces of the boat and will look into an outdoor exhibit in the spring.

"Obviously we would have to plan how to do that. Things have to be cleaned, things would have to be put onto a concrete slab, things would have to be secured, and then a plaque, which would give the history of the boat and possibly the captains of the boat."

Riley says they were twenty years too late in trying to fix it, and it was in such a state of deterioration, it had become a danger.

"By the time they had come to remove it, the mast was already leaning, completely bent over the boat, and many of the pieces of the upper deck were hanging off."

The tender to remove the ship was awarded to Dyck Enterprises in Winnipegosis.
