The Parkland Regional Library's bookmobile service will be discontinued in June of 2016.
Library director Jean-Louis Guillas says the service is being terminated because its usage patterns have been changing for several years now.
"The communities where we go with the bookmobile are small communities, and the advent of electronic books has also changed how some of those patrons were using the bookmobile service. Also, because we service a number of schools, the schools were using internet and electronic materials. That really changed how on the non-fiction side for young people, how they were using the service."
Guillas says the age of the vehicle was another factor that lead to the decision to end the service.
"The costs to replace our current vehicle would be around $250,000 because it's a specialized kind of vehicle and we just couldn't just see making that size of an investment going forward when the use patterns had changed."
Guillas says the library may be adding additional hours to some of their branches to reach people who were only serviced via the bookmobile.
