The Gilbert Plains Municipality is directing the federal government's attention to beavers in Riding Mountain National Park and their effect on water management.

Reeve Blake Price says he doesn't know if the federal government is aware of how big an issue it is and how big of an issue it's becoming.

"A big part of our concern is these beavers are damming and damming and damming, year after year after year, and they don't knock their dam down, they just continue to build on top. And at some point in time, that dam starts to give, it starts to rot on the bottom. And when you get a big volume of water backed up and that dam gives, it creates a lot of damage."

Gilbert Plains has sent a letter to Canada's Minister for the Environment, Leona Aglukkaq, and cc'ed some others, including each of the local federal election candidates.
