Children can take their hunter safety course starting at the age of 12, but being safe while hunting should be on every hunter's mind.
Regional Field Supervisor for Conservation and Water Stewardship for the Western Region Jim Camann says that there are four main reasons that hunting accidents occur.
“The number one cause for hunting accidents in North America is because of poor judgment. Such as mistaking a person for game, certainly not knowing what their shooting at. People get excited and they’ll pull that trigger quick.”
Camann also says that the other three main reasons for accidents are:
- Not following firearm safety rules.
- Lack of firearm control or practice.
- Mechanical failure.
