The Dauphin RCMP responded to a stabbing in an alley behind 2nd Avenue SW in Dauphin around 1:00 am on Sunday, May 29th. Officers arrived at the scene to find a 21-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds along with a 20-year-old man with a single stab wound. Both of them were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The RCMP's preliminary investigation revealed that the victims were walking along the street when they saw a group of men chasing another group. The couple attempted to avoid the fight by heading into the back alley, where the group of people being chased then ran past them. The couple were attacked and stabbed by suspects in the second group as they passed them in the back alley.

Officers in the area also found a 17-year-old male who they consider to be one of the suspects involved. He was arrested, but resisted, which resulted in a minor injury. He was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure and was later released from the hospital and remanded into custody.

The Dauphin RCMP continue to search for the other suspects and are asking anyone with information regarding this assault to contact them at 204-622-5020, call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477, or submit a secure tip online here.

Dauphin Consumer Co-op made a $24,100 donation to the Parkland Ukrainian Family Fund yesterday. With this donation, the fund has reached over $200,000 dollars in cash donations, as well as numerous donations in kind.

Co-op General Manager Lorne Eiffert says the fund reached out to them to see if they would help with the cost of food and fuel for the families.

It fits just perfectly into our vision of the co-op about enriching the lives of our communities and we're quite humbled and appreciative of being able to support those families coming in, especially during such a terrible time.

Dauphin Co-op also has a program where employees who volunteer around the community get their name in a draw and Co-op donates $500 to a charity of the winner's choice. Murray Lennartz won the Employee Volunteer Program, and on behalf of himself and the Dauphin and District Snowmobline club donated the money to the Family Fund as well.

The City of Dauphin is looking for feedback from the community for its new City Plan. The City Plan is done every five years and shapes the way the city looks at development and growth going forward.

Martijn Van Luijn, the Economic Development Manager for the City of Dauphin, says a big part of the plan is public feedback.

"The question is what is it that we need as a community. Do we need more housing, and if so what kind of housing. Do we need more commercial development, and if so what kind of commercial development and where. What would be the best place to do that? How do we envision our community looking 20 years from now?"

The City is hosting a Community Open House on Tuesday, June 7th from 6 pm to 8 pm, and an Open Planning Studio on Wednesday, June 8th, from 9 am to noon. If you can't make the events, you can also have your voice heard on an online survey that will be up on the City website starting June 7th.

The Dauphin City Council held its regular council meeting tonight. Here are some highlights from the meeting.

There were three public hearings, all of which were represented by Jillian Ungarian for conditional use applications. The applications are to allow the construction of two-family dwellings in a residential single-family zone.

The three applications are for 216, 220, and 224 Hawthorne Avenue, and the motion was carried for all applications with a number of conditions laid out by Mayor Laughland during the meeting.

Strong winds tonight are expected to raise the water level of Dauphin Lake by up to five feet along the shoreline, which has prompted both the provincial government and RM of Lakeshore to send warnings out.

The provincial government put out an Immediate Evacuation Requirement for Rainbow Beach Provincial Park Campsites. They are telling people to remove all equipment and camping units.

The RM of Lakeshore is telling residents to find alternate accommodations or be prepared to evacuate, as water levels could cause access to properties to be cut off. If residents choose to find alternate accommodations, they're asked to contact the municipal office at 204-733-2423 to advise that they have done so.

A wind warning is in effect for much of the Parkland including Dauphin and Gilbert Plains.

Severe wind gusts of 90 km/h are expected Monday night and Tuesday morning.

A powerful Colorado low will affect the region over the next two days. Northerly winds will begin to strengthen this afternoon and reach 60 km/h gusting to 90 km/h late this evening. The strong winds will continue through the overnight hours and Tuesday morning.

Nearby residents of Lake Winnipegosis and Dauphin Lake are being asked to prepare for water levels that are expected to rise over five feet along shorelines. Winds will diminish Tuesday afternoon as the low moves off into northwestern Ontario.

Damage to buildings, such as roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage. High winds may result in power outages and fallen tree branches. Motorists, especially in high-profile vehicles, may expect hazardous driving conditions on highways subject to strong crosswinds.

If you've ever driven to or from Thompson, especially in the Winter, you might have a story or two to tell about driving on Highway 6.

A group called the Safer Highway 6 Citizens Action Group was recently at the Manitoba Legislature in Winnipeg to bring awareness to the need for improvements to Highway 6. Especially during the cold, snowy months.

It's extremely dangerous in the winter time because there's so much semi-trailer and double-length trailer traffic. If it's a snowy day, over and over again, if you follow a semi, or one's coming at you, there's a couple seconds where you're blinded from snow. There's been a humongous number of accidents over the years, many people are scared to drive that highway..", said Volker Beckmann, who is part of the Safer Highway 6 Citizens Action Group.

Some of the accidents that have occured over the years on Highway 6 have been fatal. Including as recently as December of 2021 when Thompson's MLA Danielle Adams died in a car crash on the highway.

Beckmann noted they are seeking improvements such as wider shoulders, more rest stops, and more passing lanes.

The group also has a petition on change.org which has garnered close to 6000 signatures. It was presented to Doyle Piwniuk, Manitoba's Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, who said he would take a drive to Thompson in June to see Highway 6 for himself. While Beckmann and the group were thankful for that future gesture, they say the minister needs to drive Highway 6 in Winter with his own family to truly understand the need for improvements.

Beckmann also mentioned the government said they are looking at a ten-year construction plan. However, he and the group pointed out that according to Manitoba Public Insurance there are 7 to 8 accidents a month on Highway 6.

".. And if we don't see improvements very soon over the next few years, those statistics for accidents will continue."
