This year’s election candidates for the riding of Dauphin-Swan River-Neepawa are starting to make preparations for their campaigns.
NDP candidate Laverne Lewycky says he’s been attending several council meetings for municipalities across the constituency as he tries to get a sense of what issues they want to see addressed in the lead up to this fall’s election.
"A lot of municipalities want to have their meetings on the second and fourth Tuesday or Wednesday of the month. So some of them, I will actually be able to sit in on council meetings. Other times I may just have to interview council members or the CAO's or Mayors, Reeves or Heads of Council to get an update on to that.
Conservative candidate Robert Sopuck says he’s met with a few already and has learned about issues involving infrastructure, rail transportation and rural economic development.
Green candidate Kate Storey says she’s just starting the process of reaching out to municipalities.
Independent candidate Inky Mark however says he won’t be doing any such meetings saying when he was the mayor of Dauphin his dealings with the federal government were what he called a frustrating experience that didn’t change anything, saying he prefers talking with everyday people about their issues.
Liberal candidate Ray Piche has yet to make any comments on whether he’ll be meeting with municipalities.
The federal election is set for October 19.
