The Canadian Meat Council has high hopes that the WTO will again rule in Canada's favour on the latest US challenge on Country of Orgin Labeling.

Director of International Trade Ron Davidson says the Meat Council would support the federal government implementing retaliatory tariffs against the US if the American government doesn't comply with the ruling.

"There's a process involved there, we will need to go to the WTO and indicate what we believe in Canada what the amount of retaliation should be. The US challenges on that suggestion what the numbers should be, the WTO will then rule on what they believe that we have proven as retaliation. At that point, Canada will then have the option of implementing retaliatory measures."

Davidson says the Meat Council's position on the issue is that the rules in place should be followed by all countries.

The WTO is expected to make their decision within the next week.
