The general manager with Manitoba Beef Producers says consumers should expect meat prices to stay high for a while.

Beef prices in 2014 were already at record highs, and recent Stats Can data shows prices have climbed even higher-- 18 per cent higher this March than at the same time last year.

MBP GM Melinda German says if she had to guess, Manitobans should expect beef prices to stay up for at least the next three to four years.

"If I had a crystal ball I'd be a rich lady, but I think that it's here for a few more years. (It's) difficult to tell. And the reason why I say that is because the herd inventories are low and it does take us a while to rebuild those inventories."

German says this is good news for the industry because it gives producers more time to recover from the difficult times of the past decade.
