Ammonia Leak Caused Rec Complex Evacuation

Dauphin Recreation Services has confirmed that yesterday's evacuation was ordered after an ammonia leak.

All occupants were forced out of the building around 3pm yesterday, and the Dauphin Fire Department and a hazmat team from Brandon were forced to come help out.

The Dauphin Fire Department says the leak has been contained, and emergency personnel are conducting air quality tests. They also confirmed in a Facebook post last night that all of the public made it out of the building unscathed, but a contractor was taken to the Dauphin Regional Health Centre and treated for minor injuries.

Rec Services General Manager Terry Payne says all activities in the Parkland Rec Complex and Credit Union Place today are cancelled.

Winnipeg Teen Hockey Player Dead

A 15-year-old hockey player has died weeks after colliding with a train while driving home from a game with her father.

Taylor Piskor had been in a coma since the accident happened on January 10th near Elie, west of Winnipeg.

Her father, Peter Piskor, also sustained back injuries and had several broken bones that required surgery.

According to a GoFundMe Page, the teen died Thursday night at the Health Sciences Centre.

Guaranteed Income Petition

Winnipeg Centre M-P Robert-Falcon Ouellette wants people to sign his petition in support of a guaranteed minimum income.

He says a guaranteed annual income would ensure everyone a set income just for living, and streamline and replace existing government social assistance programs.

Not everyone supports the idea. Charles Lammam of the Fraser Institute says it has merit but he's skeptical it would work.

He says governments spent 185 billion dollars on income support programming in 2013, and changing the delivery of those services would require a whole set of different pieces of the puzzle to fall into place.

Mental Health Services Needed In La Loche

The member of Parliament for La Loche says people in the northern Saskatchewan community are in urgent need of mental health services in the wake of a mass shooting.

Georgina Jolibois says people are showing signs of post-traumatic stress disorder.

In a letter to the health minister, the New Democrat M-P says one young person attempted suicide earlier this week.

Back in January, two brothers were killed at a home in the community before the shooter went to the school and killed a teacher and a teacher's aide, and wounded seven others.

A 17-year-old boy has been charged.
