Students from Smith Jackson school collected toys and other items to donate to the Syrian Refugee Families
25 students gathered together old/new items of theirs that they could donate. The students filled nine backpacks with toys, clothing and other items for them to give to the youngest members of the three Syrian Refugee Families that are here now in Dauphin.

Irene Yarema-Whitwell, who's the grade one teacher says, that the students were anxious for the new kids to arrive and were worried they wouldn't have anything for school.

"And so we said we would help build a backpack for the refugee children. We were just only going to do it for for the students that were going to be attending school, but then the kids said that the moms will need stuff for the toddlers too. So I said sure, we will do it all!"

Yarema-Whitwell says that their compassion for all of this is heartwarming.

"A six year old said to me, oh i'm so sad that we can only help three families. It's just amazing to me you know, my heart just melts when a child says something like that."

They had so many donations that they all couldn't fit into the backpacks, so they will be giving the rest to the Parkland Crossings.
