MVSD Grants

One of Mountain View School Division's grant proposal ideas would give students a new place to collaborate, but you might not expect what's inspired it.

The Division is looking for funds to give the Goose Lake High School in Roblin a Starbucks-concept environment for its library.

But Superintendent Donna Davidson says not to worry, they're not going to get kids hyped up on caffeine.

"It's more around the concept of having a comfortable sitting area, docking stations for technological devices, places where they can charge their devices; it's more an area for collaboration, conversation."

Mountain View School Division is looking to get more than $11-million in grants for new additions and renovations to their schools.

Davidson says there are several initiatives they're looking at to enhance student learning and experience.

The division still needs to apply for the grants, so they're not entirely sure if or when they would get the money.

Parkland Crossing Playground Addition

A new indoor playground structure at Parkland Crossing opens to the public today.

Director Jamie Harvey says it's open Monday to Friday, nine to noon, free of charge.

"We're excited with having the new equipment ready to go. It looks great and I tried it out... and it's a lot of fun."

Harvey says next on the list for the indoor playground is replacing the riding toys because the wheels the current ones have scratch up the floor.

The playground was paid for with grants from several community organizations, including Tim Horton's, the Rotary Club, the Community Foundation, the Parkland Healthy Child Coalition, and the Dauphin Neighbourhoud Renewal Corporation.

Winnipeg Airport Border Services Report

Weapons disguised as cutlery and a shipment of a chemical used to make the date-rape drug were among the 300 contraband seizures made at the Winnipeg airport by the Canada Border Services Agency last year.

The agency says in a news release summarizing CBSA activity for the year that in August, customs officers seized 35 prohibited weapons in a shipment destined for an Alberta address.

The package, marked "cutlery,'' contained 30 five-pointed shurikens and five knives with a push dagger handle.

In June, officers searched a shipment from China and found material that is used in the production of the date-rape drug. The importer was subsequently arrested by Winnipeg police.
