Government Wraps Up Inquiry Consultations with Victims' Families

As the Trudeau government works to set the scope and mandate of an inquiry into missing and murdered aboriginal females, his cabinet minister on the matter says the number of cases is "way bigger'' than the 1,200 that has been estimated.

Indigenous Affairs Minister Carolyn Bennett's comment yesterday came as the government marked the end of a nation-wide consultation process with the families of victims.

An RCMP report in 2014 put the tally at just under 1,200 murdered and missing women and girls between 1980 and 2012, and the force added another 32 deaths and 11 disappearances in an update last year.

Demolition crews tore down the remaining structure yesterday while the arson unit launched an investigation.
