Candlelight Vigil Honours Those Lost in Recent Tragedies

Songs were sung, and prayers were offered in Dauphin yesterday for the victims of events like the school shooting in La Loche.

Rainbow Chartrand, who sung at the vigil in Vermillion Park, says memorials like these are important.

"I think it is important to honour children and families, especially after they go through such a loss. It's very difficult, and it's very hard, not just on the families, but communities are impacted by such losses, so I wanted to be here to honour them."

An organizer for the vigil also used the opportunity to bring awareness for issues like substance abuse and bullying.

Federal Election Cost

An eye-opening estimate has been tabled on how much it cost to hold the marathon 78-day campaign for last fall's federal election.

Elections Canada puts the cost at 443-million dollars -- about 50 per cent more than the previous election in 2011.

And that doesn't take into account how much the independent agency will have to pay to political parties and candidates who are eligible for rebates related to their campaign expenses.

Among the factors driving up the cost were the addition of 30 new ridings, an additional day of advance polls, more election workers, and higher pay rates.

Wait Times for Adoption Information in Manitoba Increasing

Despite adding more staff, wait times continue to grow for Manitobans wanting their adoption information.

When the province first unsealed 75 years of adoption records last June, they said the wait time would be six weeks, then in fall it grew to 12 weeks and now people have to wait roughly six months.

Officials say the initial influx of requests was so high it has created a backlog, but staff hope to decrease wait times over the next several months.

Roughly one thousand people have requested access to birth records since June.

Alberta Man Arrested In Neepawa

An Alberta man has been arrested after an R-C-M-P officer was dragged by a vehicle allegedly involved in a gas and dash in western Manitoba.

Mounties say they got a report yesterday morning about a possible impaired driver who left a gas station in Gladstone without paying for fuel.

Allegedly, police tried to stop the vehicle, it and the police cruiser collided, and the officer tried to arrest the driver, but the vehicle drove away, dragging the officer.

RCMP say the officer shot his firearm to stop the suspect, but the vehicle got away.

The arrest eventually was made in Neepawa.

A 27-year-old man from Fort McMurray, Alta., is in custody, and formal charges have not yet been laid.

CORRECTION: The story about an Alberta man being arrested in Neepawa originally stated that the arrest was made in Gladstone. It also said charges had been laid. CKDM apologizes for the mistake.
