Police Shootout in Winnipeg
 
Police say the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba has been notified following a shooutout between officers and a fleeing robbery suspect.

The suspect allegedly robbed a gas station in Winnipeg yesterday, and fired his gun before taking off in a vehicle.

Police allege he fired at officers who chased him, and that police returned fire.

No one was hurt, and police later arrested a 51-year-old man who they say faces numerous charges.

Extreme Cold
 
There's an extreme cold warning in effect from Environment Canada. It stretches across southern Manitoba, southern Saskatchewan, and northeastern Alberta.
 
Environment Canada says wind chill values of -40 to -45 will redevelop tonight.
 
Swan River may be spared from the extreme cold due to cloud cover coming from the north.
 
Environment Canada says some of the cloud cover may moderate temperatures in western Manitoba as well.

Health Ministers Meeting
 
Health Ministers are meeting in Vancouver this week and have some questions for the federal minister -- Jane Philpott.

British Columbia Health Minister Terry Lake says they want to discuss issues such as chronic diseases, drug costs and funding formulas.

He says the previous Conservative federal government was less engaged when it came to health care.

Lake says the new Liberal government gives the impression it wants to be more involved.

UN Panel Puts Number On Those Affected by Wars, Disasters
 
A panel appointed by the United Nations says life-saving help is needed by 125-million people around the world who've been devastated by natural disasters and wars.

And, it estimates the cost of providing that humanitarian aid at about $40-billion US annually.

The panel says part of that sum could be raised by a small tax on tickets to sports and entertainment events, airline travel, and gasoline.

Winnipeg Homelessness Report
 
The Social Planning Council of Winnipeg believes there are at least 14-hundred homeless people in the city.

The final report of the council's street census found there were nearly 480 people who are absolutely homeless with nowhere to go, while over 900 had some form of accommodation.

The Winnipeg Street Census was conducted over a 24-hour period last October.

The report showed that 43 is the average age of a person experiencing homelessness in Winnipeg.
