New Digs for U of M

The University of Manitoba is getting a shiny new building but it won't come cheap.

The province is spending 90 million dollars for the building at the Bannatyne Campus, attached to the Health Sciences Centre.

The building will allow all of the health faculties like medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and nursing to be housed under one roof.

Nursing students will move from their existing building at the main campus off Pembina Highway. Their existing building will now be used by the engineering faculty.

First Nation To Get Access to Holding Cells

A northern Manitoba First Nation should soon be able to stop chaining up disorderly residents in a hockey arena if an RCMP promise to provide the keys to its holding cell comes through.

Northlands Denesuline First Nation went public in 2012 about having to use a towing chain to handcuff people to a bench in the dressing room of the local arena because the RCMP wouldn't allow use of their holding cell.

At the time, the Mounties said there were no band constables on the reserve with the appropriate training.

Now the RCMP say they will provide a key for the holding cell once those involved have completed proper security clearances and training. They say they'll help get that accomplished.

SAD Presentations on Blue Monday

Blue Monday, recognized as the most depressing day of the year, is next week.

Eleanor Snitka, outreach manager for Mood disorders association of Manitoba in the parkland region, says some people can suffer from extreme depression with too much cloud and not enough sunlight.

"Part of that is a reduced level of sunlight can really sort of upset our body's internal clock. And that drop of serotonin, which is a brain chemical that affects our mood, can really play a role in that."

Snitka will be offering presentations on seasonal affective disorder at the Dauphin senior centre on Monday morning at 11 and at the Friendship Centre at 2.
