Dozens of Racehorses Die in Stable Fire

Tragedy in southern Ontario's horse-racing community with the deaths of more than 40 racehorses in a stable fire west of Toronto.

The fire began after 11 pm local time at the Classy Lane Stables Training Centre in Puslinch, and was fought by firefighters from several communities in the Guelph and Hamilton areas.

Barb Miller, who owns the facility with her husband Jamie, is currently in Florida and estimates at least 43 of the animals perished.

She says her husband is scrambling to get a flight back home as soon as possible.

Miller says all of the horses are standardbreds owned by trainers who race them at Ontario's Mohawk, Woodbine and Flamboro racetracks.

Ambulances For Ukraine

The Manitoba government is donating three ambulances to the humanitarian Ambulances for Ukraine project.

Premier Greg Selinger says the project will get the vehicles to front-line medical and health-care workers in Ukraine.

The ambulances are less than eight years old and have had recent safety inspections, but the province is spending about 40-thousand dollars on any repairs needed to ensure they are roadworthy and reliable.

Selinger says ambulances previously donated by emergency services in Saskatchewan and Alberta have already been delivered to Ukrainian hospitals treating wounded from conflict zones.

Manitoba Mother Starts Necktie Campaign to Find Missing Men

The mother of a missing Manitoba man hopes her necktie campaign will help find her son and others who have disappeared.

Colten Pratt, who is 26, has been missing since November 2014 and Lydia Daniels has spent the last year trying to find him.

Daniels says that while there are awareness campaigns for women who have vanished -- including red ribbons for missing and murdered indigenous women -- she couldn't find anything for missing men.

On the weekend, she and her friends attached men's neckties to bridges on the Long Plain reserve and around hydro poles in downtown Winnipeg. She says supporters have placed nearly 100 ties so far.

Swan Made Special Envoy For Military Affairs

MLA Andrew Swan has been appointed as Manitoba's special envoy for military affairs.

Premier Greg Selinger says the position was created as a way of supporting military families in the province.

Swan was recently appointed to the regimental senate of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles and his grandfather James Swan was a regimental sergeant major of the Winnipeg Light Infantry during the Second World War.

Swan replaces Deanne Crothers, who held the post for the past two years.
