Obama Has "Unfinished Business" With Gun Violence

As he enters his final year in office US President Barack Obama is planning to act on what he calls "one piece of unfinished business'' -- his country's "epidemic of gun violence.''

Obama says he will meet with the attorney general on Monday to talk about what action he can take to tighten gun controls irrespective of Congress.

He says it's been frustrating watching gun control bills go nowhere in Congress, which is heavily influenced by the National Rifle Association and other pro-gun groups.

The president says he hears from so many children, parents, and teachers each time there's a mass shooting, and must try to do something.

Texas Becomes An Open Carry State

A law took effect in Texas yesterday that allows registered handgun owners to carry their holstered weapons in plain sight.

Texas is the 45th American state to have a so-called "open carry'' gun law, which has drawn mixed reaction.

Opponents say the law will make it harder for police to pick out the bad guys, while supporters say criminals will be less likely to victimize pistol-packing citizens.

Girl Saved At Saskatchewan Ski Hill

A seven-year-old girl dropped to safety into a net after dangling from a chair lift at a Saskatchewan ski hill.

Don Williams of Mission Ridge Winter Park in Fort Qu'Appelle says it happened on Thursday afternoon when the girl slipped between the restraining bar and the front edge of her seat.

She ended up hanging by her helmet about six metres in the air, and had to be caught in a net because she was too high to be reached with ladders.

Williams says the girl was taken to hospital and was released a short time after.
