Changing Of The Guard For Flin Flon NDP

A Manitoba government backbencher who openly criticized Premier Greg Selinger has been ousted by party members in his own constituency.

Clarence Pettersen lost an NDP nomination meeting Friday night in Flin Flon to Tom Lindsey, a long-time union activist.

Pettersen says his rejection by party members is a sign that the fallout from the NDP's recent leadership crisis is not over.

Lindsey acknowledges some people were angry about Pettersen's criticism of Selinger, but the vote came down to who could best represent local interests.

More Refugees Arrive In Canada

There were plenty of smiles at Montreal's Trudeau Airport, as 161 Syrian refugees set foot on Canadian soil.

They landed last night aboard a Canadian military aircraft after a flight from Lebanon.

Anas Fransis, who came to Canada from Syria seven years ago, said it was "a real Christmas present'' to be reunited with relatives he hadn't seen since 2008.

Last night's newcomers were processed, making them officially permanent residents of Canada.

They're among the 25,000 Syrians the federal government plans to bring to Canada by the end of February.

Carberry Casino Losing Money

There's a saying in gambling that the house always wins, but that's not the case for a new casino in Manitoba.

According to the audited financial statements for the first nine months of the Sand Hills Casino in Carberry, the facility took in $8.9-million in gaming and other revenue.

But once expenses were deducted, the casino lost $1.3-million.

Sand Hills Casino spokeswoman Barbara Czech says the casino hasn't been as busy as expected, but they're working hard to bring in more patrons.

Sand Hills was built near Carberry after Brandon residents voted against a casino in plebiscites.

In a statement issued late last night, Trudeau says he will meet with the premiers within the next three months to hammer out Canada's emission targets.

Yesterday's agreement asks all countries to restrict their greenhouse gas emissions and limits temperature rise to two degrees Celsius from pre-industrial levels.
