Manitoba Beef Producers says cattle numbers could be on the way up in the next couple of years.

President Heinz Reimer says they're seeing more cattle retention this year, but it won't be a fast turnaround with how long it takes to raise cattle for beef producing.

"By the time a calf is born and until it's bred and has a calf that's ready for sale, we're probably looking at close to two and a half years. There's definitely been an increase in guys that are holding back more heifers for breeding so our herd numbers should start coming up in the next year or two I would think."

Reimer says decreasing cattle numbers have been a big reason for increasing beef prices, but the prices should come down with more supply becoming available.
